because you're a lazy init slob

# /opt/splunk/bin/splunk enable boot-start

yes.  this is an old old splunk. don't freak out.  you can totally
install it to runas another user. sheesh.

# ls -la /etc/init.d/ |grep splunk

-rwxr--r--  1 root root  748 Jan 21 09:59 splunk

yep.  i'm a slob.

# apt-get install sysvinit-utils
# which sysv-rc-conf

/usr/sbin/sysv-rc-conf

still a slob.

# ln -s /usr/sbin/sysv-rc-conf /usr/sbin/sysvconfig

i did.  yes, i did.

# sysvconfig

x service      1       2       3       4       5       0       6       S                                                           x
x ----------------------------------------------------------------------------  
x splunk      [ ]     [ ]     [ ]     [ ]     [ ]     [ ]     [ ]     [ ]  

to:

yeah.  how lazy.

# ls -la /etc/rc2.d/ | grep splunk

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root   16 Jan 21 10:01 S20splunk -> ../init.d/splunk
